GITA AT A GLANCE – CHAPTER 11

VISWAROOPA DARSHANA OF BHAGAVAN

In the last chapter, Bhagavan Sri Krishna explained to Arjuna about his cosmic form.  To make the explanation clearer and to satisfy the wish of Arjuna, in this Chapter Bhagavan Sri Krishna is showing his cosmic form to Arjuna.  Arjuna says to Bhagavan Sri Krishna that you explained to me about your cosmic form but I wish to see your Cosmic form.

Bhagavan Sri Krishna said, Oh Arjuna! Behold my cosmic form it is of hundreds and thousands of different types, different colors and different shapes.

This cosmic form of Bhagavan cannot be seen with the ordinary physical eyes. It needs Jnana chakshu: (the eyes of knowledge). So Bhagavan granted Arjuna the Divya chakshu to see his cosmic form.  Vyasa granted the Divya Drishti to Sanjaya who was reporting the whole incident to King Dhrithrashtra.

Sanjaya explained to the king what Arjuna saw through his divine eyes.    Arjuna saw in the form of Bhagavan Krishna all the moving and unmoving forms in the universe.  He was standing before him as a column of effulgence.  It was a brilliance of thousands of suns together.  That form had numerous mouths, numerous eyes, hands, numerous legs.  He was holding numerous weapons.  He was wearing numerous divine ornaments, and divine garlands, He had faces on all sides, Arjuna saw the entire Universe in the form of Bhagavan.

Arjuna with his head bowed down and standing in horripilation said to Bhagavan, I see all the gods, Lord Brahma and all the celestial being in your form. Since I see all the forms in you, I could see many eyes, faces, stomachs, legs and hands. There is no beginning or end for your form; it is a column of bright light. I also see the diadem, couch, club and discus. It is difficult to behold the brilliance. The brilliance is like burning of millions of suns. You are the imperishable Brahman. You are the treasure house of the Universe. Without beginning, middle or end you are Infinite in power. I could see the fire coming out from your mouth and it is heating up the entire universe. You fill all the quarters. Your form is wonderful but it is also fearful too.  I could see the        Rudras, Aditya, Sadhyas, Ashvins, Maruts and many celestial being – some of them extol you and some look up to you in fear. I could see all of them in you; I could even see the sons of Dhritarashtra in you.  Your mouth is wide open and some of them enter your mouth, some are crushed by your teeth and some are stuck in the gap of your teeth and some come out happily. Arjuna requested Bhagavan to tell about His original nature.

Bhagavan Sri Krishna said, I am the all destroying time; now I am engaged in destroying the world. Even if you do not kill the warriors, it is the time of their death and I will destroy them all. So, you conquer the enemies and enjoy the kingdom. Bhagavan said that the great warriors like Dhrona, Karna, Bheeshma and other warriors were already killed by me, so conquer your enemies in battle and rule the kingdom.

Hearing this Arjuna said, Krishna you are the Supreme Being. You are Imperishable.  You are beyond the Being and non-Being. You are the primeval God, the ancient Purusha, the refuge of the Universe and the Supreme Abode. You are the Being with Infinite forms. Salutations to you.

Without understanding your greatness, I have behaved with you as my friend, relative and called you as oh! Krishna, Madhava etc, so please pardon me for all that. I have done it out of my ignorance. You are the father of this world; You are the Guru of this world; none can be equal to you in the three worlds; you are to be adored by this world. Having said this, Arjuna bowed down to Sri Krishna begging for pardon.

Arjuna said that Krishna your form is so fearful, so please show me your form as before.

Bhagavan said that Arjuna this cosmic form of mine was shown to you by using my yogic power; no one has seen this before and no one is going to see this form of mine after also. It is my primeval, infinite cosmic form. Other than you no one in this universe has seen it. So do not be afraid, not bewildered, now be hold again the former form of mine. Having thus spoken to Arjuna, Bhagavan Sri Krishna showed Arjuna his pleasant form.

Seeing the pleasant form of Bhagavan Krishna, Arjuna was now composed and restored to his own nature. Bhagavan Sri Krishna said that it is very hard to see my cosmic form. Neither by the Practice of Vedas, nor by the practice of austerities, nor by gift or sacrifice can one see this cosmic form. Only by single minded devotion can one behold this cosmic form Said Bhagavan Krishna.

Arjuna saluted Bhagavan with folded Palms and waited for further Advice.
