DARK SIDE OF THE LEADERSHIP QUALITY

DARK SIDE OF THE LEADERSHIP QUALITY

Leaders take this world to success.  There will be no progress without a leader.  A group’s success depends on the leader.  Capabilities of the leaders are different.  Sometimes they lead a small group, sometimes they lead a moderate group, and sometimes an entire nation.  Leaders are needed in personal life too, most of the families are led by a leader in the form of a father or mother or someone else.  There must be someone somewhere to lead us professionally and personally.

Majority of the people accept the leader and their leadership qualities, but some leaders fail to accept or understand the group.  They always feel that others may go wrong.  This non acceptance may happen due to the fear of the outcome, arrogance or due to lack of confidence on the group members.  A leader’s misunderstanding and non acceptance of the group is known as the dark side of the leadership quality.  When a leader fail to accept a group, then the group will gradually reject the leader.  When a leader becomes a dictator, the group members lose their freedom and confidence on the leader and due to this personal enmity or conflict begins.  Nowadays this type of conflict is very common in professional and personal life.

A leader should definitely have a calm mentality; else he will fail to know the pulse of the group members.  A leader should not have ego, so that he can accept the ideas of the group members.  Many leaders create fear syndrome among the group members, so that they will not oppose the leader’s ideas.  This behavior is a blot on the leadership quality, because accepting other ideas indicate a strong mentality.  Ross Perrot said “Lead and inspire people.  Don’t try to manage and manipulate people.  Inventories can be managed, but people must be led”.  It is very difficult for some leaders to stay alone for a long time without bossing or controlling a few people, else they feel insecured.  Some leaders behave in a most awkward way to show their leadership quality.  A leader definitely needs patience than experience.  It is the patience which makes a leader perfect.

In my view, it is a subtle line which differentiates a leader from a dictator.  A leader is accepted and respected, whereas a dictator cannot be accepted by everyone.  A leader accepts and respects his group, whereas a dictator respects his own ideas.  A leader can be assertive, but never be rude.  A leader must be confident about his group and must give importance to ideas from the group.  Personal ego or partiality is a negative trait, because a brilliant idea can sprout out from anyone’s mind.  Ego should never be a barrier to accept others because later on, ego will become our own barrier to mingle with others.  The mentality of the leader must be flexible else the group may be bored to have him as their leader.  In the name of leadership a leader have no right to curb the freedom of the members.  A leader should stand on the platform of patience, experience and intelligence; else a leader will only have a group of disobeying members.  In the personal or professional life, due to such unenthusiastic qualities in the leader, the relationship between the leader and the group often breakdown.  “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”  John Quincy Adams.  A calm mind will get intuition from the inner silence to deal with problems.
